What counts as Healthcare and wellness

This industry combines section Q “Human health and social work activities” with two classes of personal services. These are very different target groups; hardly any request needs all of them at once.

The official breakdown of medical practices is simple: general practice, specialist, dentist. The classification does not distinguish specialties such as orthopaedics, ophthalmology or dermatology.

What is public in healthcare – and what is not

Healthcare has many registers. But they serve care provision and supervision; only some of them are intended for the public.

Physician register: not public
The Associations of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (Kassenärztliche Vereinigungen) keep a physician register for each licensing district (§ 1 Ärzte-ZV). It may be inspected by these associations, the health insurance funds and their state associations and – with a legitimate interest – the physician themselves (§ 9 Ärzte-ZV). The provision does not allow general inspection.
Doctor search for insured persons
The Associations of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians must inform insured persons online about the consultation hours of contracted physicians (§ 75(1a) SGB V). These search services are intended for patients, not for retrieving lists.
Hospital directory
The statistical offices publish a directory of hospitals and preventive care or rehabilitation facilities with address, operator and number of beds per department. It is free of charge; for clinics it is a more precise source than any company list.
Care facilities
The services and quality of care facilities must be published online free of charge; the state associations of the long-term care insurance funds are responsible for this (§ 115(1a) SGB XI).

Not in the export

  • specialist title and areas of focus
  • statutory health insurance licence and lifetime physician number
  • number of beds, places or practitioners
  • consultation hours
  • names of individual doctors and therapists as a separate column

These 15 columns are included.

Practice, operator, location: who is behind an address

A medical practice is usually not a business with a register entry. Doctors practise a liberal profession; single and group practices are not in the commercial register. They are visible through their own website. Such a record is personal data – with all the consequences for the duty to inform and the right to object.

With clinics and care homes it is the other way round: the operator is a company, an association or a public body and often runs many facilities. In a list of businesses, the operator appears at its registered office, not each facility. If you need locations, the official hospital directory serves you better.

Hairdressers practise a licensed craft, beauticians an unlicensed one – both are listed in the annexes to the Crafts Code. In the statistics they share class 96.02. They can only be separated via the business name.

Example request

We sell practice software for therapists and are looking for physiotherapy and massage practices (86.90.2) in Saxony and Thuringia with a phone number. Midwives are in the same subclass – please tell us how reliably they can be excluded.

Questions

Healthcare and wellness: frequently asked questions

Not via the WZ code: all specialist practices are in class 86.22. A selection by specialty relies on the practice name and is therefore incomplete. We tell you in advance how many records it covers.

No. § 9 Ärzte-ZV names the Associations of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians, the health insurance funds and their state associations and the physician themselves as entitled to inspect it. What is public are the associations’ doctor searches for insured persons and what a practice states on its own website.

§ 7 UWG governs the channel as for other businesses: email only with prior express consent (subsection 2 no. 2), phone only with at least presumed consent (subsection 2 no. 1). Additional special rules apply to advertising medicines and medical devices, which you should have reviewed by a lawyer.
