Section P “Education” consists of a single division, 85. It ranges from nurseries through general and vocational schools and higher education to other education – sports and recreation courses, music and dance schools, driving schools, language schools, adult education and tutoring.
Crèches and after-school care are not classified here but under social work (88.91 child day-care activities). Training that a company provides only for its own employees appears under that company’s own industry.

A state school is not a business in its own right: it is run by a municipality, a district or a federal state. Decisions on equipment and procurement are often made by the school authority and its procurement office, not by the head teacher alone. Private schools, training providers and course operators, by contrast, do their own purchasing.
The official figure and our figure therefore describe different things. Destatis counts businesses; schools and nurseries run directly by a federal state or a municipality are not counted individually. Our database also lists such institutions when they appear with their own address and contact details.
Courses, studios and schools with similar names are common. A clean selection is easier if you name the group you are looking for – driving schools, music schools, language schools – rather than the whole section.
