Addresses of Farmers, Agricultural Businesses and Food Manufacturers

Farms, agricultural contractors, forestry businesses, fishing and aquaculture as well as food and beverage manufacturers – for agricultural machinery, agricultural trade, packaging, laboratory analysis and providers of livestock and process technology.

255,010 agricultural holdings according to Destatis, farm structure survey 2023 (reference date 1 March 2023, published 3 May 2024). Agricultural holdings according to the 2023 farm structure survey (representative results). Manufacturers of food, beverages and tobacco products (WZ 10 to 12) are not included; the business register counts 26,210 of them (2024, GENESIS 52111-0010). The business register does not cover agriculture itself (section A). We quote the size, contact coverage and price of your export on request.

What counts as Agriculture and food

This industry combines primary production with the first processing stage. Statistically, these are two separate worlds: section A “Agriculture, forestry and fishing” and two divisions of manufacturing. Wholesale of agricultural products and food retail are not included.

Bakeries and butchers manufacture food and are therefore classified under division 10 – even though under crafts law they are craft businesses and most people think of them as shops.

Public directories around the farm and the food business

Farmers are usually not in the commercial register. Instead, EU and federal law require several public directories in this industry.

Recipients of EU agricultural payments
The Federal Office for Agriculture and Food publishes the recipients of payments from the EU agricultural funds with name, municipality, postcode and amounts per measure (agrarzahlungen.de). Anyone receiving no more than 1,250 euros in the agricultural financial year appears without a name (§ 3 AFIV). The publication does not include street, phone number or type of farming; according to the Federal Office, it remains accessible for two years.
Approved food establishments
Establishments processing food of animal origin require approval under Regulation (EC) No 853/2004. The Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety makes the lists available with address, approval number and activity; the approval itself is granted by the federal states.
Organic businesses
Each organic control body keeps a directory of the businesses it inspects and makes it available online (§ 5 Organic Farming Act).

Not in the export

  • farmed area and livestock numbers
  • farm number and amount of agricultural payments
  • organic certificate and control body
  • approval number of the food establishment
  • farm succession and farm manager

These 15 columns are included.

Why farmers are under-represented in company lists

§ 1 HGB does not apply to agricultural and forestry businesses (§ 3 HGB): a farm does not become a merchant simply by its activity and is therefore usually not in the commercial register. If it has no website with a legal notice either, it is hardly visible publicly. Company lists therefore mainly contain agricultural companies, cooperatives, agricultural contractors and direct marketers with their own website.

This is not a weakness of any particular database, but a consequence of the available sources. If you want to reach as many individual farms as possible, raise this before ordering and ask for the expected coverage.

With processors it is the other way round: dairies, slaughterhouses, breweries and bakery product manufacturers in the form of a company are in the commercial register. Craft bakers and butchers with a shop fall into the same division as industry; here the legal form is the only rough indication of size.

Example request

We sell milking equipment and are looking for livestock farms (01.4) and mixed farms (01.5) in Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein, preferably with a phone number. We are aware that individual farms are only partly covered – please tell us the number of records and the breakdown by legal form.

Questions

Agriculture and food: frequently asked questions

No, and that will not be the case once the dataset is complete either. Individual farms without a register entry and without a website are hardly visible publicly. We state the coverage for your selection before making an offer.

No. It publishes name, municipality, postcode and the amounts per measure; street and phone number are missing. Anyone receiving no more than 1,250 euros in the agricultural financial year appears without a name (§ 3 AFIV), and the information remains accessible for two years.

The WZ does not distinguish between crafts and industry. A selection by legal form and region is possible as an approximation; the export does not offer a reliable separation by business size.
